The heavy punching bag is constructed of an outer skin comprised of metal micro mesh, containing pea sized lead pellets. If a human, or even a Pi’Rell, were to strike it with a bare fist they would likely break every bone in their hand.

Even a Vakutan would soon find their knuckles bloody, but for an Odex the structural integrity is barely sufficient to withstand our heaviest blows. I stand in the gym, stripped to the waist, blasting the heavy bag with powerful blows that leave temporary divots.

The chain holding the bag to the ceiling is as thick as my arm, which is a good thing because my rage seems to know no bounds today. Breaking up with Tori was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I might as well have torn out my own heart from my bleeding chest.

Normally, I could console myself with the knowledge that I’ve done the honorable thing. But in this case, I’m not certain that’s true, much as I want to believe it.

While there are logical arguments I could make about whether or not my decision was the best thing for both of us, in my heart I know it’s all garbage. The truth is, I’m afraid. Something is happening inside of me, in my Old Ways soul, and I don’t know how to deal with it.

There is a difference between desire and need. I desire Tori’s naked body pressed against me, but I need her so much more than that. How can I have plunged head long off this particular precipice without even realizing it?

I attack the bag with renewed vigor, as if I could beat these emotions out of my head in effigy. There have been many times when battle or just physical exertion have calmed my troubled mind. Not so today. There are no stitches than can mend a broken heart.

As my fists continue to rain down blows, I mock my own thoughts. A broken heart? Really, Haru? What is it that Zylan is saying? Love is for poets? I think that’s right. Yes, love is for poets and I’m no poet. I am a warrior, a guardian of the Old Ways and an exemplar of honor.

My fists fly a bit slower as I consider that Zylan, cynical Zylan, is a hypocrite. After all, does he not love Dr. Minerva? He risked everything for her, and when he thought she was dying he had the eyes of a man condemned to hell.

Glades of Light, we are a ship of fools. There is no other explanation for it. This vessel is a magnet for the disenfranchised, the cast aways, the scum of society that normally gets swept under the rug. Yet we all congregate here. Soldiers live, and wonder why.

When I was enlisted in the Coalition Forces, they had a saying. You don’t ask why disease spreads, or houses burn. There are no answers to those questions. Likewise, you don’t ask why you’re fighting. Ataxia’s will, is likely the best explanation you’re likely to get.
